Few things are more comforting than quality baked goods, and in a year when comfort has been so much needed, it’s no surprise that Toronto’s Sweetie Pie bakery is booming.

The company opened its first location on Harbord Street in July last year and has since expanded to Queen Street West and Unionville with a location in Danforth next week and another in the Distillery District nearby.

An 8,000 square foot commissary production facility in South Etobicoke was also constructed. Needless to say, people all over Toronto quickly adopted Sweetie Pie and their wonderful pastries.

Sweetie Pie was created by Cesario Ginjo, who is also the man behind FlowersCanada.com and Dolce Chocolate Co. In fact, every Sweetie Pie location has a wall with Dolce Chocolate available to customers as well.

Ginjo says it’s this passion for giving customers what they want that has allowed Sweetie Pie to thrive over the past year. The quality of great franchise but the care and passion of a local bakery is the combination he thinks every Sweetie Pie location embodies.

“I think the biggest success is that my wife connects with every customer in every location differently,” Ginjo told blogTO.

“At the end of the day, the customer still wants the quality and service of a big box store, but they want the feel of a local.”

Each store manager in Sweetie Pie stores has a mandate to get involved in their community. Over the past year, they have supported Pride Month events and supported local youth shelters.

Both service quality and product quality are top priorities for Ginjo and his team, even if that means throwing the product away or investing more money in employee training.

“I’d rather throw away 10 pies if they’re not 100% than try to sell them. My customers are too important to me,” Ginjo explained.

“We hire with attitude. We hire based on the person, if you are happy, lucky, you love life, that’s what we look for in a person. If you are open-minded and have the right attitude, we can teach you anything. “

The pies come in a nice packaging.

The investment in its employees and customers has certainly paid off as Sweetie Pie stores continue to appear in the city.

Ginjo told blogTO he believes the company may one day be open to franchising, saying consultants have said the Sweetie Pie brand may be the next Canadian franchise.

As Sweetie Pie continues on his meteoric rise, it seems it’s only a matter of time before he gets too big for the city. One day the residents of Toronto will be able to say that they were here first.
