After near record heat on the weekend, showers and thunderstorms set in late Monday and a few could be strong to severe.

INDIANAPOLIS – Abnormally warm air is coming for the weekend with records nearing night this evening and high temperatures on Sunday.

A brisk southerly breeze coupled with a warm front paired with plenty of sun will bring temperatures down into the low 80s for most of central Indiana and through the mid-1980s in the western part of the state. . The average high for this time of year is now in the upper 60s.

A weak wave will bring some increased clouds on Saturday evening and overnight which will keep the temperatures rather warm. In fact, we will be a few degrees away from reaching a lower “hot” record. This is 68 from 1879. Our lowest forecast is 66.

The clouds dissipate Sunday morning and we bring back the sun. Winds will increase from the south at times gusting to 25 mph. Daytime highs will again be within a few degrees of a record. That rises to 88 as of 2010 and our forecast is 86. Western parts of the state could see the upper 80s.

We have another mostly dry day on Monday with highs in the 80s before a strong cold front. Showers and thunderstorms set in late Monday and a few could be strong to severe. Rain falls early on Tuesday with a slight chill with highs falling in the mid-1970s.
