A funding request of £ 585,000 is being made to the Arts Council to modernize the Harris Special Exhibition Galleries.

Preston City Council is applying for the grant as part of Harris Your Place, the project to transform the Grade I listed building into an innovative community-centric cultural center in the heart of the city.
The application is submitted to the capital investment program recently launched by the Arts Council. The fund is an open access program to help cultural organizations operate safely after the pandemic.
The money would pay for the Harris Special Exhibition Galleries to be upgraded to the government’s compensation standard, through the purchase of new blinds, exhibition lighting, signage, heating and ventilation.
The work would allow Harris to host larger-scale and more complex exhibitions, including loans from major galleries and museums.

Approval to submit the grant application was given at a board meeting on Thursday, December 9th.
It was also agreed that £ 28,637.50 + VAT would be spent on the designs needed for the application.
The Arts Council app follows recent approaches by the Wolfson Foundation and the Garfield Weston Foundation to cover fit-out work for the second-story balcony, the reception area where the new elevator arrives, and the Special Collections gallery. .
Meanwhile, work is underway at Harris using up-front £ 10million funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Towns Fund.

A decision on the Arts Council application is expected in April 2022.
