Melbourne Victory 1-4 Manchester United result: Recap Ten Hag’s second game in charge

Ten Hag’s second game ends with Manchester United winning 4-1.

They lost 1-0 but bounced back thanks to goals from McTominay, Martial, Rashford and an own goal from Lupancu.

Ten Hag wouldn’t have been happy with the way his side conceded as Lindelof and Maguire were slow and in bad positions, but there were plenty of positives too.

United have a fourth. Chong beats his man down the right side then crosses towards the back post. He appears to be heading towards Van de Beek but Melbourne Victory’s Lupancu deflects the ball into his own net.

Nani is on the ground. He is receiving a warm welcome from all corners of the pitch.

Nani is expected to make a cameo appearance against his former team. He receives a standing ovation as he prepares to make his debut.

Rashford has another effort on goal but his header is aimed straight at the goalkeeper. Malacia plays into a neat cross but Rashford’s header goes straight to the opposing keeper.

United struggled with fast counterattacks today. They definitely need pace in their back line, which was demonstrated in the first half when Maguire and Lindelof struggled when Melbourne Victory scored their first goal. I wonder who will start as centre-back for United’s Premier League opener against Brighton…

Manchester United make it 3-1. Bailly again dribbles from behind, then plays a neat pass to Rashford. The United captain then touches the ball and beats the keeper with a cool finish.

It takes 20 minutes to get out in Melbourne. United are enjoying possession a lot now. Melbourne Victory haven’t made many changes so they look very tired. You sense that another goal is approaching. And we are still waiting for Nani to arrive…

Iqbal and Savage have been very good so far. They’re both only 19, but they look head and shoulders above some of the other players on this pitch. Ten Hag will be impressed.

Amad plays as a fake No.9 with Chong on the right and Rashford on the left.

He showed some neat touches inside the area. Van de Beek also plays quite high, where Ten Hag says he is best deployed.

Iqbal is certainly not out of his depth in this Manchester United team. He beats his man by pirouetting then sends the ball into the penalty area. Melbourne Victory did well to clear the ball from danger but it was a fantastic play from Iqbal.

Rashford has joy on the left side. He definitely looks like he has an extra spring in his step.

Telles continues to receive minutes as a left centre-back. I wonder if he might have a future at Old Trafford as a left-back centre-back. It looks like Shaw and Malacia will face off for the left-back spot, so Telles might have to change his game to be able to tell the club.

Rashford wears the captain’s armband in this second half after Maguire was substituted.

Lots of changes for United with Ten Hag choosing to rotate their 10 outfield players. It’s another good chance to see how Iqbal and Savage are doing in the first team.
