You are refreshed and ready to go. But don’t throw away those masks just yet.

With COVID-19 cases on the rise again in Nevada, the Southern Nevada Health District recommends that both vaccinated and unvaccinated people wear masks in crowded indoor areas.

Nevada recorded 938 new cases Thursday, the most since February. The state also reported 15 more deaths, bringing the total to 5,752.

“The number of COVID-19 cases and the positivity rate continue to increase in our community,” the health district said in a press release.

“The correct use of masks has been shown to be effective in helping to prevent people from contracting and spreading COVID-19. With increasing cases and slowing vaccination rates in Clark County, the health district’s recommendation to wear masks in overcrowded public places, including grocery stores, malls, major events, and casinos, is a step towards making full use of the tools at our disposal to stop the pandemic, ”health officials said.

Since this is only a recommendation, there will be no enforcement, officials say.

Governor Steve Sisolak did not answer questions about whether he would demand the masks again. The Nevada Gaming Control Board also did not respond to questions.

Los Angeles County health officials are once against the requirement to wear masks, even for the vaccinated.

SNHD also urges individuals to protect themselves, their loved ones and the community by getting vaccinated.

“The COVID-19 vaccine is the most important and effective step people can take to protect themselves and others from COVID-19. In addition, sick people should stay at home and get tested if they have symptoms related to COVID-19, ”the district said in a statement. “People who have not been vaccinated and have participated in activities that put them at a higher risk of COVID-19, such as traveling or attending mass gatherings, should also get tested. “

Just under 42% of southern Nevadans are vaccinated, according to SNHD data, while just over half have at least one injection.

Statewide, about 43% of Nevadans have been vaccinated, according to U.S. health officials.
