Kiambaa by-election: the journey

Today’s Kiambaa by-legislative elections were sparked by the passing of Paul Koinange, who was serving his second term after being elected in 2013 and 2017.

Koinange died of Covid-19 while undergoing treatment. He was buried in his ancestral home in Kiambaa on April 4, 2021.

Kiambaa’s campaigns have been hot over the past 21 days with allied members of Jubilee and UDA-leaning MPs and Senators spreading through the population.

The competition was billed as a competition for supremacy between President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto.

Both teams have well-oiled online teams that have been torn apart in a vicious propaganda war.

The by-election is so important that the vice president camped at one point in the constituency campaigning for the UDA candidate.

Both camps have spared no resources to campaign for their respective candidates. The teams roamed the neighborhoods of Kiambaa en masse day after day.

The Jubilee team led by Limuru MP Peter Mwathi who succeeded Paul Koinange as chairman of the Select Parliamentary Committee on Security, Kieni MP Kanini Kega and social media influencer Pauline Njoroge have often met to strategize on how to help the jubilee candidate win the seat.

The team would assemble and send high powered campaign contingents across the constituency in trucks and SUVs. The team would establish its base in the voice-rich regions of Ruaka, Banana, Cianda, Karuri, Gachie and Ndenderu.

On the other hand, the UDA team led by the deputy of Mathira Rigathi Gachagua, the deputy of Kikuyu Kimani Ichungwa, the senator of Muranga Irungu Kangata and the deputy of Kiharu Ndindi Nyoro carried out formidable campaigns.
