As a food loving couple, it’s no surprise Caroline Fernandez and Ryan McGlynn hooked up over a meal. The two met in November 2018 via a wallyball league. They were both new to the league and played for different teams. There was a league dinner, and McGlynn was late so as Fernandez’s friend left, he entered the restaurant.

As the Daughtry song says, Ryan “found an empty seat sitting next to me and asked for my name,” Fernandez recalls. “The seat next to me was the only empty seat at the table. He asked me my name, we started talking, and it turned out that we both had a passion for food, sports and travel. We went out for brunch shortly after (Dime Store… I will always remember), and the rest, as they say, is history.

While vacationing in Peru in May 2019, they came up with the idea of ​​creating a blog where they could share their passion for cooking, traveling and adventure with a wider audience, but it’s just a trip. in West Virginia that they understood the vision and purpose of Peanut Butter + Bacon.

They created a website and social media accounts, and initially they wanted to capture their adventures and “food battles” as well as showcase Michigan cuisine. Since the launch of the platform, Peanut Butter + Bacon has evolved to promote local small businesses and other food bloggers.

By day Fernandez works as a structural sustainability engineer at Rivian (electric vehicles) and McGlynn works as a key account manager for a leading manufacturer in Chicago.

Peanut Butter + Bacon’s top pick for our favorite restaurant destination for road trips has to be The Southerner, located just along the banks of the Kalamazoo River in cozy Saugatuck, Michigan. If there’s one sandwich worth driving around in the state, it’s the Chicken Biscuit Sandwich here. Pair this delicious creation with an accompaniment of Anson Mills Grit & homemade B & B pickles.

While you’re in the area, refuel at Mad Cap Coffee in Grand Rapids and Odd Side Ales in Holland.

Traverse City: wings, beer and coffee

During our visit to CT Last summer, we stopped by the Rare Bird Brewpub for the huge selection of over 30 Michigan faucets, including a delicious mix of their own creations. But it’s the food that really made this place a must-see. Our choices are Otto’s Farm Chicken Wings, Valley View Farms Pork Belly Nachos, and Flawlessly Delicious and Dangerous Fried Cheese Curds.

If you fancy a coffee during your stay CT, there is only one place to stop and that is, BLACK MRKT. This chic and modern café offers a variety of roast coffees on site as well as sweet and savory baked goods.

Upper Peninsula: Top notch food in unexpected places

Last year we took a trip to Munising with friends to kayak and hike the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. During our visit we came across this hidden gem named I‘s Dine or Dash, which serves Lake Superior smoked white fish burgers and fried jalapeño pierogis. Truly a match made in heaven.

Whenever you visit the lands north of the bridge, it is imperative to look for one or two blocks. We suggest you have one original beef patty while you are in town and six for the road, as we did.
