Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued formal recommendations on who should receive a COVID-19 booster. And suddenly, pharmacies open appointments.
CVS is the latest to join Walgreens in offering Pfizer Boosters to those who qualify.
CVS asks patients to make an appointment at cvs.com Where minuteclinic.com. You should be able to provide the manufacturer and date of your last COVID vaccine, showing that you originally received two doses of the Pfizer vaccine at least six months ago. Patients who sign up for the recall are encouraged to “self-certify” their eligibility.
“We have the experience and infrastructure to play a leadership role in administering boosters to eligible populations,†said Troyen A. Brennan, MD, MPH, executive vice president and medical director of CVS Health, in a press release. “We also continue to make it as convenient as possible for those who are not vaccinated to receive their first doses. “
Pfizer was the first COVID vaccine to be approved by the United States Food & Drug Administration and is so far the only one of the three vaccines to be approved to use a booster.
Given the lack of data on the safety of the vaccine mix from different manufacturers, Americans who have received Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines have to wait until their own boosters are approved.
According to CDC guidelines, the following people are eligible – and should or may – receive a Pfizer recall:
- people 65 years of age and over and residents of long-term care facilities should receive a booster of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series,
- people aged 50 to 64 with underlying medical conditions should receive a booster of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series,
- people aged 18 to 49 with underlying medical conditions may receive a booster of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series, based on their individual benefits and risks, and
- people aged 18 to 64 who are at increased risk of exposure and transmission to COVID-19 due to their professional or institutional environment may receive a booster of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series, based on their individual benefits and risks.
