CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES – Legal fights mark preparations for recall elections in California

Several court battles are underway as California prepares to finalize the list of candidates for the September recall election that could impeach Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom.

Conservative talk radio host Larry Elder has filed a complaint alleging that California election officials improperly barred him from entering the contest.

Meanwhile, former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer is expected to appear in court to fight for the right to be called “retired” San Diego mayor on the ballot.

The maneuvers in the courtroom are the latest drama in the run-up to the September 14 elections. The state is expected to publish the final list of candidates running to replace Newsom on Wednesday.

Highlights on the California recall

On July 17, California Secretary of State Shirley Weber released a list of 41 candidates qualified to run for recall. About 70 candidates initially filed a declaration of intent to run with the secretary of state, according to Ballot.

The last day candidates had to fill out the documents to run in the recall elections was July 16.

The final report from the Secretary of State’s office, released on June 23, validated 1,719,943 signatures on the recall petition. The recall effort required 1,495,709 verified signatures to trigger a recall election. About 441,406 signatures were invalidated.

Only 43 of the more than 1.7 million Californians who signed the recall petition chose to remove their names from the list.

On July 1, Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis finalized the cost of the election at $ 276 million.
