Australia Covid Live News Update: Victoria Records 535 New Cases, One Death As Police Prepare To Block Anti-Lockdown Protests; a new case in Qld | Australia News

The rollout comes after ACT recorded one of its highest daily counts of new Covid numbers, with 30 cases announced on Friday.

Chief Minister of ACT Andrew Barr said the ADF would be used for the first time along the border after several reports of COVID-19 entering Canberra from the highway.

On Saturday marking the first day of the school vacation, there will also be additional police patrols at the main ACT entry points.

“It’s a timely reminder that you can’t travel anywhere on vacation,” Barr said on Friday.

“You can only leave ACT if you have an essential reason. “

ACT Health said more than 80% of Canberrans over the age of 16 have received at least their first dose of the vaccine, making it the second jurisdiction after NSW to reach the milestone.

Health figures also showed that more than 55% of those over 16 in ACT are fully immunized, the highest of any state or territory.

Just over 52% of ACT residents aged 12 and over had received two doses.

Friday’s total of 30 new cases was the second highest number of COVID infections in a single day for the territory.

ACT’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr Kerryn Coleman said that although the number of new cases was high, it did not indicate an upward trend.

There are now eight cases of Covid-19 in hospitals in Canberra, including one in intensive care and on a ventilator.

Federal Minister of Health Greg Hunt Told reporters on Friday that ACT hospitals were well prepared to deal with a potential increase in COVID-related admissions, if any increases once lockdown restrictions are relaxed.

Mr Barr discussed the topic of hospital capacity with the Prime Minister Scott Morrison, along with other heads of state and territory, at the national cabinet meeting on Friday.
