Anthony Michael Hall and John Hughes on Breakfast Club sequel idea – The Hollywood Reporter

John Hughes, a champion of teen drama comedy, was considering a potential return to The breakfast club by the late 1980s and Anthony Michael Hall was aware of his pitch.

In an interview with The independent while promoting Halloween kills, the actor who broke up as a teenager thanks to a string of notable Hughes projects detailed his unfortunate breakup with the filmmaker, which led to the two not speaking to each other in the 20 years leading up to Hughes in 2009.

While recounting the last time they spoke on the phone – it was 1987 just as production of John Candy and Dan Aykroyd’s vacation comedy began. The great outdoors – Hall recalled a few details the writer-director had previously laid out about the sequel to his instant classic teen drama comedy.

“At that point, he mentioned the potential to do a sequel to The breakfast club, he recalls. “It would have been all of us at our middle age. His idea was to pick up with them in their twenties or thirties. This [idea] was on his mind, but it was the last conversation I had with him.

While there may have been a vision of a sequel in the works, much of the hope faded after Hughes died at 59 from a heart attack. But before his death, the conversation about a potential Breakfast club tracking had been almost cyclical after its release in 1985.

In 2015, actress Molly Ringwald spoke to The daily beast for the film’s 30th anniversary follow-up rumors with the characters every 10 years. Ringwald said she was unaware, but had heard of a possible sequel scenario.

“Someone told me there was a script for a sequel to The breakfast club. One day, it will all come out, ”she said at the time.

A decade earlier, following an almost full reunion of the film’s cast at the MTV Movie Awards, the late Moviefone blog reported that a potential Hughes-led sequel is in the works. Star Emilio Estevez has reportedly been interested in reprise his role as sensitive sportsman Andrew Clark, telling the blog “If it happens, I’m here.”

“John has an idea for a sequel – mature college students all starting over – for one reason or another,” Estevez said, according to the outlet. “The twist would be that we are all poles apart from what we were in the original.”
