Amazon’s ‘Wheel of Time’ series looks truly epic in this great new trailer

I have a confession. Despite being quite a fantasy / sci-fi reader, I only read Robert Jordan’s first sprawl book. Wheel of time series.

I made a false start Eye of the world several times before entering it. I guess when I was younger it looked a bit too much of a Tolkien scam at first.

I realize now, after I finish the novel, that it’s quite different and I also know that I should probably read the rest of the series at some point, but I don’t have to buckle up and do that just yet.

Still, I read the first book, so I have a feel for what the story is and I’ll be ready to watch – and revisit here on my blog – the adaptation from Amazon. The first two episodes of The wheel of time debuts on Amazon Prime Video on November 19, so it’s just around the corner.

I’m actually pretty excited, especially after watching the latest trailer, titled “Moiraine’s Quest”. Lady Moiraine is an Aes Sedai – a woman who can channel One Power, aka magic – and a major character in the series.

Here is the trailer:

The trailer serves as a sort of explanation. There we hear Moiraine (Rosamund Pike) talking about the Dragon Reborn (who is a person, by the way, not a dragon) and the Dark One and various other Very Fantasy Tropes. This is fantasy epic in all its unfettered glory – in a way, before Grimdark, and very different from Game Of Thrones.

It’s “high fantasy” with a lot of magic, a sprawling cast, tons of lore and everything in between.

By the way, if you’re a fan of this series, be sure to check out James Islington’s The Licanius Trilogy. The first book is The shadow of what has been lost and all three books in the series are excellent, with some really fascinating magical systems and a lot of mystery and intriguing story to dig into.

Are you looking forward to The wheel of time? Let me know what you think of the trailer and what you hope this series fits. I would love to hear your thoughts.
